Best Practice in Job Making and Entrepreneurship SYSLAB® - Systems Laboratory for Innovation and Employment The SYSLAB Concept was initiated and developed in Bergen, Norway, in 1992. The main objective was to create job opportunities in small and medium sized enterprises for unemployed but highly skilled and educated persons. Currently we are operating SYSLAB units near the Norwegian capital Oslo. The success of SYSLAB is its penetrating motivation strategy and its focus on relation competence, where knowledge, skills and experience are equally important components. Also the direct and continuous interaction with local business communities is an integral part of the over-all success in terms of job creation, entrepreneurship and SME network building. To date some 2000 people have participated in SYSLAB units throughout Europe. Of these an average of 80 % have obtained permanent jobs within less than 6 months, irrespective of age, sex, educational or ethnic backgrounds. Many were unemployed for several years before entering our program. Particularly interesting observations are: 1. SYSLAB, developed in a Nordic country then transferred to Southern and Eastern Europe, show equally good results irrespective of cultural background and political settings. 2. 45 % of SYSLAB participants obtain permanent jobs via applications, some 35-45 % solicits their jobs during company visits, and finally some 10-20% starts their own SME businesses during their 6-month tenure at SYSLAB. |
